The Emergency Management and Public Safety Department aims to build a safer and more resilient community. The key actions to achieve these aims includes partnering with stakeholders to develop arrangements to prevent, prepare, respond and recover from emergencies and disasters. Other core functions include the enhancement of public safety through reducing the risk of fire on council land, proactive community engagement and the management of close circuit television systems to support business operations, crime prevention and investigation. The Department comprises four teams to manage these initiatives, these being; Disaster Management, Disaster Resilience and Recovery, Fire Management, and Public Safety.

This is a BRAND NEW opportunity assisting with fostering the integral partnership between Council and the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services!
As the SES Deputy Local Controller you will assist the recently appointed SES Local Controller in the operational management of the Moreton Bay State Emergency Service (SES) Unit to build safer and more resilient communities, and ensure legislative and policy requirements are met for both organisations.
You will provide support in the operational response for SES assistance provided to residents and agencies via storm and flood response, evacuation and evacuation centre support, undertaking land and other forensic searches, and deployments to support other local government areas both intra and interstate.
From providing training support for SES members and volunteers, to assisting with developing public relations and education programs at the local level that promote community resilience and self-sufficiency... this is certainly a varied role for someone seeking that next challenge.
This role plays a key part assisting in identifying, challenging and removing any barriers to the achievement of the Moreton Bay SES Unit being at the forefront of emergency management activities within the region and the State.
We are seeking a motivated team member and leader, experienced in overseeing the operation of an SES Unit and volunteers in high-pressure situations, during crisis and natural disasters.
You will be an exceptional communicator, with proven experience in developing and delivering training, to facilitate positive community engagement and actively contribute to fostering a healthy, inclusive and well-connected workplace.
In addition to a strong level of knowledge of the Fire and Emergency Services Act 1990 (Qld) and Disaster Management Act 2003 (Qld), you will also ideally be aware of the Queensland Disaster Management Arrangements and how they apply in this environment. You will also:
- Hold a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment would be highly desirable.
- Possess a Current Queensland Working with Children Blue Card or be willing to apply for prior to commencing work.
- Be a current active member of the SES, or at least be eligible to join.
An essential requirement of this role is to deliver training on Tuesdays and Wednesday evenings, so you will need to be willing and available to adjust your standard work day on those days to accommodate (1:20pm to 10pm). You will also be available to participate in an on-call duty officer roster, accept emergency activation calls, and work some weekends, public holidays and out of hours when required due to the nature of the role.
Term: Maximum Term Full Time - 3 years
Award/Level: Qld Local Government Industry Award (Stream A) - Level 5 of the Moreton Bay Regional Council EBA4 Certified Agreement
Location: Murrumba Downs
- $84,340 pa + super (up to 12%) + leave loading
- 72.5 hour fortnight
- 9 day fortnight
