The Strategic Planning and Place Making Department takes a strategic approach to long term planning and policy development to shape the growth, urban form, accessibility, and liveability of our region whilst managing natural hazards and protecting and conserving our natural resources, environment, and heritage. The department’s plans, programs, and initiatives are structured to meet the requirements of the Southeast Queensland Regional Plan and related State legislation, in addition to supporting local demands and needs.

As a Senior Strategic Planner, you’ll be at the centre of some of Moreton Bay’s most exciting land use, policy and placemaking initiatives. You will lead moderate‑to‑complex projects, influence key planning directions, and provide trusted expert advice that drives meaningful change for our growing community.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Act as a technical expert, guiding team members and providing senior level planning advice.
  • Lead and support moderate‑to‑complex strategic planning and placemaking projects, including managing project teams and external consultants.
  • Provide expert advice on planning legislation, policy and strategic planning issues to internal stakeholders, community members and elected representatives.
  • Contribute to the creation and implementation of key planning scheme policies, infrastructure planning, major projects and placemaking initiatives.
  • Represent Council through community consultation, stakeholder engagement, meetings and forums.
  • Build strong, positive relationships across diverse internal and external stakeholder groups.

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Extensive experience in strategic land use planning and/or development assessment.
  • Proven ability to deliver moderate‑to‑complex planning projects, including research, policy analysis and project leadership.
  • Solid understanding of relevant legislation including the Planning Act 2016, SEQ Regional Plan, planning schemes, local laws and related state/local frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond to changing policy environments and deliver outcomes in uncertain or evolving contexts.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing strategic planning documents, reports and policy options.
  • Understanding of placemaking principles and contemporary urban planning trends.
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex planning concepts clearly.
  • Degree in Urban and Regional Planning (or equivalent).
