Join City of Moreton Bay as a Principal Data and Application Engineer and help shape and enhance our communities for today and tomorrow.

The City of Moreton Bay is embarking on one of the most ambitious digital transformation programs in local government. At the centre is our City Brain initiative, a bold vision to unify data, intelligence, and innovation to better serve our community.

We’re looking for a Principal Data and Application Engineer who will be the technical authority behind our cloud-native application and data ecosystem across AWS and Microsoft Fabric. If you're passionate about architecting high‑performance data platforms, building low‑latency APIs, and enabling real-time intelligence at scale, this is your opportunity to directly shape the City’s digital future.

As our Principal Data and Application Engineer, you’ll lead the architecture, design, and optimisation of cloud-ready applications, APIs, and data platforms that power real-time insights, AI/ML capabilities, and next-generation digital services. Working across AWS and Microsoft Fabric, you’ll engineer the systems that drive smarter decisions, personalised services, and future-proof digital experiences for the City.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design and lead large-scale data and application platforms across AWS and Microsoft Fabric.
  • Build and optimise real-time data pipelines, APIs, and microservices that power modern digital services.
  • Enable secure cross-cloud integration between AWS and Microsoft Fabric, ensuring strong governance and data quality.
  • Develop scalable APIs (REST/GraphQL) and support applications that rely on fast, reliable access to data.
  • Implement DevOps and CI/CD practices using Git-based workflows and Infrastructure‑as‑Code.
  • Support AI/ML initiatives by integrating data services with model endpoints and automated decision-making.
  • Lead modernisation efforts, including the migration of legacy platforms to cloud-native solutions.
  • Architect and implement scalable solutions for high-volume, real-time data acquisition from IoT sensors and urban systems, leveraging AWS IoT Core, API Gateways, MQTT and Fabric streaming services.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, and set engineering standards across the team.
  • Work with vendors and partners to deliver high-quality, scalable digital solutions.

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Extensive senior-level engineering experience with leadership responsibility.
  • Deep hands-on expertise across AWS (API Gateway, Lambda, EKS/ECS, EventBridge, S3, Glue/Lake Formation, Kinesis/MSK).
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse, SQL endpoints, Real-Time Analytics) and Purview governance.
  • Proven ability to design large-scale, real-time data systems and high-performance application layers.
  • Strong development capability in Python and/or TypeScript/Java.
  • Experience with Kafka, Spark, Airflow, containerisation, DevOps, and IaC.
  • Background in AI/ML integration, model serving, or MLOps (highly desirable).
  • Experience working with geospatial data and Smart City platforms is a strong advantage.
  • AWS certifications (preferred or in progress).
