The Environment and Sustainability Policy and Planning Department sits within the Planning Directorate and takes a lead role in developing the strategic environmental and sustainability policies, projects and plans to deliver healthy environments and sustainable and resilient outcomes. Council has recently adopted its Environment and Sustainability Strategy 2042, which provides a roadmap to guide the actions of Council and our communities to deliver our vision and the Our Healthy Environments goal and outcomes in the Corporate Plan 2022-2027. This strategy will be supported by several other key pieces of work, including the development of our Biodiversity Plan, which is underway.

The Department is focused on meeting legislative requirements, community aspirations and Council’s priorities. Its functions are across three branches including Sustainability Planning, Natural Hazards Planning and Biodiversity Planning. Right now, we are looking for a Senior Planner - Biodiversity to join the team.

About the opportunity:

As our Senior Planner - Biodiversity you will act as a technical specialist in the development and delivery of integrated environmental and biodiversity and conservation policy and planning outcomes across the region. As a Senior member of the team, you will lead and support the delivery of moderate-to-complex environmental and biodiversity policy and planning projects to achieve strategic and business outcomes.

This position is envisaged to have a key role in the ensuring that the future growth and development in the region adequately supports Council’s biodiversity goals and outcomes, including leading biodiversity planning input into a range of growth area, neighbourhood and city-wide biodiversity planning projects, strategies and policies.

The Senior Planner - Biodiversity will foster professional and effective relationships, working collaboratively with key stakeholders (internally and externally) to ensure projects and services are achieved and to deliver safe, practical, and sustainable outcomes.

In addition, you’ll:

  • act as a technical specialist and provide guidance on environmental and biodiversity planning matters in accordance with legislative, policy and business requirements.
  • lead and support the delivery of moderate-to-complex biodiversity planning initiatives and specialist project teams (including external consultants) to achieve strategic and business outcomes.
  • build strong relationships across a range of diverse internal and external stakeholders to ensure projects and service deliverables are achieved.

About you:

We are seeking someone with considerable knowledge and experience across the fields of biodiversity, environmental and strategic planning, including relevant qualifications within those fields or similar and current c class drivers’ licence.

The Senior Planner - Biodiversity will also have experience in leading and supporting the delivery of moderate-to-complex technical and strategic work programs and project teams, the ability to effectively work with a range of officers from across Council and be able to demonstrate project management skills to deliver great outcomes. We are seeking someone who has excellent communication skills both written and verbal.

You will have: 

  • considerable experience in the delivery of moderate-to-complex environmental and biodiversity planning plans, projects, policies, and strategies, including contributing to multi-disciplinary project-based teams, , including substantial experience in applying relevant Australian, state and local government legislation
  • the ability to drive high-performance outcomes in time-critical environments with competing stakeholder interests.
  • excellent communication skills with an ability to communicate complex environmental planning concepts and matters in a simple and concise manner (both verbally and in written form) and negotiate safe, practicable and sustainable outcomes.
  • outstanding collaboration skills and demonstrated experience with stakeholder engagement and consultation, as well as being confident to negotiate practical and sustainable outcomes.
  • experience working within a government and political context on environmental planning, projects and policies is highly desirable.
  • You will hold the degree qualification necessary to fulfill the position requirements.
